The Afghan Academy - Ghazni

Progress Report for March-April 2007

Project Introduction:

The women of Afghanistan after years of economic and social oppression are ready to change their lives and communities. The Afghan Academy in the Jaghori District of Ghazni has been a catalyst for this change. The Afghan Academy, with the support of the Embassy of France and Afghans4Tomorrow, aims to give its students a sense of worth through education and vocational skills, while also providing them with community empowerment and planning skills. In turn, these women continue the cycle of female empowerment by sharing the knowledge they acquire with the communities they represent.

Activities:

Twenty three female students participated in a 3-month program at the Academy this spring. The program included literacy and literacy teaching methods, health, hygiene and basic midwife training, vocational training (including crafts and jarring preserves for income generation purposes.) All students were given the necessary tools for the program including books, pens, paper, soap, bandages, as well as basic materials for child birth assistance. They also received the jars and food products for canning, cloth and materials for craft making etc.

Testing methods:

Students took part in oral quizzes every two days, and written exams twice during the program. All students passed the final exam with with high scores.

Results:

All students passed the final exams with flying colors enabling them to return to their communities with confidence and the ability to share their new knowledge and with other women. The strength and power in the form of knowledge, which has been given to the students of The Afghan Academy, has created an infectious cycle of positive growth and change for the Jaghori people.
